How does this compare to your mutual funds? A mutual fund will typically invest in one sector and stay in that one sector, riding all the ups and downs. The acceptance is that, overall the broad market and each sector will go up in time.

Traditionally, the market and sectors go up two thirds of the time and re-trace or go down one third of the time. The end result is that the mutual fund goes up in value. Mutual fund managers therefore sell you on the premise to buy and hold a fund. They know that over the longeer term the fund will go up.

Would it not make more sense to hold the fund while it is going up and then sell it as it starts to come back down, taking the capital and the profits to a sector that is going up.
